my laptop needs fixin

i was givin a laptop and its a pretty good machine if it lets me use it. my friend (the guy who gave it to me) believes the hard drive is shot. and most of the other people who tinkered with it agree the hd is shot. anyone got any ideas where to bring it to get fixed? i was thinkin about the geek squad but most of my friends say it would be too expensive. is it a "do it yourself" fix? if so i may need help. most people tell me "go buy a new hd and do it yourself". it would be my first time. i am not a pc retard. i do know they are more than just "naked lady machines".
