Flat Screen Frenzy
Posted by Joe-GZ (388 days ago)
Hi All,
I am looking for input on a good LCD flat-screen. Currently I am looking at something in the 42-47" range. Good response time for games, great color, etc...
Currently the Aquos line is at the top of my list, but I am still wavering.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Joe,
My first post!
I too am looking and the new Sharp Aquos seems to fit, at least spec-wise.
The new 42" just came out and has a great response time <6ms:

Are you considering to buy at the large chain stores? Fortress / Broadway? Talking to the salespeople there, they recommend this model and offer free delivery (HK) and free wall mounting. The lowest quote I got so far was from Fortress at $20,400 but I don't really know if this is a good deal.
Can anyone else recommend places to purchase these screens? I miss the bargain web-shopping sites from the States ;)

Did a little more work for you.
http://hdtv.ecox.com.hk/sharplcd.php is selling this for over $1k cheaper. I'm not sure if they offer the free delivery and installation though.

Hi Kahyay,
Thank you for the information. This is exactly the set I was thinking of.
Out here in Guangzhou there is a electronics chain called Suning. The going price is 18,000 including delivery, wall mounting and a really cheap set of external speakers.
I didn't know about the Sharp website. (I should have looked.) So thank you for pointing that out too.

Got a nice 42" LG on sale at Fortress. $17100 for Full HD.
I would recommend getting full HD if you can. In a few years you'll still have the screen and your high def DVD player will use the resolution.

I spent a long time looking at new LCD's etc... went to the big chains to look, but they are only interested in selling machines which they get the most commission from (usually sharp). I went to AV life in Harbour City, and the sales guy that helped me gave great advice and prices were even better than Fortress etc... Fully recommend AV Life. Msg me if you want the guys contact.

Not my experience at all at Fortress. I even asked if they get commission and he said no. I ended up buying one that was on offer. Much less for the same spec as some other ones.

AV Life are a pretty big chain too, all over HK! They couldn't come close to a deal I got in Broadway with my 42" screen - I waited 3 months to get the right deal!

This sounds like an awesome thread!
Can we hear some prices and LCD models you've looked at, or is it against the rules?
I am still looking and if it weren't a hassle, I'd have picked up the aforementioned Sharp for 18,000 in GZ.
So far, I have a Kowloon Tong Fortress quote at 20,400 but may check out AV life. The Broadway quote was 1k more than Fortress.. I guess it depends on the salesperson.
I'm worried about putting down that kind of cash though. Shouldn't we be paying with a Credit Card or is it the norm in HK?

LG 42" Full HD with 2x HDMI was 17100.
Kahyay, what size are you talking? And cash? I just paid with a cc.

Hi Starlionblue
The Sharp Aquos LC42-PA63H is a 42"
I'm still in the process of getting a CC. I may go with HSBC, but that's another thread ;)

I just bought a Sony 46" Bravia (W series) for HK$24,800 at AV Life (CWB). Shopped around for a week and no other store (inlc Fortress and Broadway) could match the price. The tv is awesome. Sony may be a tad more expensive than other brands but I have owned 3 sony tvs over the past 10 years and cannot remember ever having a single problem with any of them.

Dang. The high end +42" LCD's in the US are running for about $8000 now!
..wonder if any of you here has moved with one of theirs here and encountered any problems. I'm considering going back next month and picking up one of these bad boys.
I'm going to use 1 with 1) Cable TV 2) XBox 360 NTSC 3) XBox (1.0) + XBMC
