Microsoft Word
Posted by Devon (308 days ago)
I've compiled a list on Microsoft word and in hindsight would've made life easier if it was in alphabetical order. Is it possible to click on something to change the list so it's itemised alphabetically so I don't have to start again? Sigh...

You can sort lists. You may need to change the text to a table to do the sort, but maybe not. I use OpenOffice, not Word, so I can't give you the mouse clicks, but it is possible.

yep changed the list to a table....
then in the tables and bordering tool bar there a button with an A-Z and Z-A
if you dont have the tables and borders tool bar right click the standard tool bar (the one with file, edit, format) then click tables..

As Idldjr says, a table is easy to sort. Just use "Table/Sort".
However, it doesn't have to be a table. As long as you have a new line (with enter) before each new item, you can still use "Table/Sort" after selecting your list.

How do I turn the list into a table? I'm not that computer literate so need step by step instructions. I'll forgive you for rolling your eyes! ha ha!

As Starlionblue says, you don't need to turn it into a table.
Just select the text.
- drag the mouse down the whole list so it is highlighted or press Ctrl A to select everything if the list is the only thing in the document
Then sort it.
- Go to the menu bar at the top and click on Table, then click on Sort from the menu. When the dialogue box comes up you can choose Ascending or Descending and then OK.

I got to where the box comes up and now I'm stuck. The box goes:
Sort by
Paragraphs Type: Text Ascending
Descending
Then by
Then by
Header Row No Header Row.
My list is compiled of a list of terms and underneath every term is it's meaning, so maybe the computer won't let me alphabetically list it because of the way it's set out?

Underneath each term is a meaning? Well then you're in trouble since we have been assuming that you have one item per line. Easiest to do now would be to create a table with the table menu (2 columns), then painstakingly copy the terms into column one and the meanings into column two.
