Looking for pro-life doctors
Posted by Alicehk (366 days ago)
I'm 8 weeks pregnant and I have yet to find a doctor who'll take care of me over the next 7 months. I am looking for a doctor who would be supportive of my decision not to undergo any screenings such as triple-screen, amnio, CVS etc. as I am pro-life. I am thinking of going to St Paul's Hospital as I know, being a Catholic hospital, it doesn't do D&Cs and abortions, however its website doesn't list any doctors nor an OB-Gyn specialty clinic. Your recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on the pregnancy. I'm not sure that too many Ob/Gyns are going to recommend an abortion solely on the basis of results of tests that are considered normal part of reasonable care for mother & baby. A caring & responsible doctor will give you the results and the implications if there are any unfavourable results. The choice should always lie with you, so provided you are a pro-life expectant mother then your decision has been made regardless of the outcomes of tests. But wouldn't you prefer to know that everything is well with your baby? Sounds like a very strong conscience thing, but I don't think you need to complicate matters unnecessarily. And for the record I would very highly recommend Dr Sally Ferguson at OT&T in Wanchai.

Looks like Dr Sally gets a lot of votes in this forum. I'll try to secure an appointment with her, thanks.

ANY Obyn should respect your decision not to undergo any tests. And if you do not undergo any tests, then abortion is not even in the equation.
I am pregnant with my third and with each pregnancy my doctor has said, "So do you want to do this blood test or that blood test, or the nuchal translucency scan?", etc.
I know of some people who would NEVER consider an abortion and yet still do the tests so that they would be able to fully equip themselves with info and be prepared for whatever problems their little one might have.

Even if you do have the tests, nobody is going to strap you down to the table and force you to have an abortion. As Joey2 says, the tests can prepare you and your medical team for what's coming, and I doubt that there is a doctor out there who would have a problem if you only took the non-invasive tests.

Another Dr to consider is Dr Joseph De Pasquale at the Raffles medical group in Central. For my first pregnancy he was not only understanding of my choice not to have these tests but congratulated me. For my current pregnancy we did decide to get some tests done, but only to be better prepared in the event of a problem.
