Foreign object inside fingernail

My very active and accident-proned 4 year old was twirling around a pillar at her swim school yesterday.

She swung really hard and the paint came off. Part of it got caught inside her fingernail and it bled. We were trying to get it out of her fingernail but to no avail. She has VERY short fingernails because she bites them and now she has the paint stuck inside it. We've tried needles and everything. Nothing seems to help and she's screaming.

Do I just leave it alone in the hope that if her nail grows, the object inside it would come out?

The object will come out eventually. However if she really is in agony perhaps you should go see a doctor. I would predict, though, that removing it won't be painless.

The object may cause an infection of the finger if not taken out. If when pressed there is pain due to swelling then needs to be removed and disinfected with a antiseptic solution.

Thank you all for the advices. The paint finally came out on its own after 2 days.

I'm glad I didn't force a needle in. She would have been in so much pain.

What a relief! ...but the things that the kids get up to.......
