Moving on from the highchair....

Our white Ikea highchair has served our toddler very well for the past year or so. I want to encourage more family meals with him sitting with us at the same table but the highchair (sans tray) makes it hard to him to self-feed if i place the food on the dining table. and having the tray on pushes him too far back from the table, which defeats the purpose. the dining table chairs are not high enough for him to reach the table and feed well. i have looked at booster seats but they seem to be for babies....any recommendations how i can go about doing this short of shelling out all that money for a stokke trip trapp? thanks!

I know you say that don't don't want to shell out the money on a Tripp Trapp. So this is probably not what you want to hear: it is definitely worth the money. We have one for each daughter. #2 still has the straps. We took them off for #1 around the 2 year mark. We love them and the kids like them too.

Pros:
- Unimpeded on the sides with no arm rests. We noticed that both kids, when they were a bit over one, started resenting being cooped up in the "cage" of a traditional high chair. When they moved to TT they WANTED to get up and sit in the chair.
- Strap system only attaches in the back and at the crotch, so it allows a good range of movement and doesn't feel too restrictive.
- Easily adjustable all the way up to adulthood.
- Plenty of color choices to match your furniture.
- Stable enough that kids over 2 can climb up and down by themselves with little risk of tipping, yet light enough not to make it a chore to move around.
- Discreet. Not an eyesore like some high chairs.
- Easy to clean.
- Both kids really like sitting in their chairs at the table.


Cons:
- Price. But if you consider that you can use it until adulthood it's not that much.
- Adjustment may require two or three iterations, between which you have to lift baby out. No biggie.

I wanted to add one major pro with Stokke that we didn't really think about before. When we were on vacation, we used these borrowed high chairs. The girls were totally slouching. Stokke promotes good sitting posture. It's quite hard to slouch in one. Once you take the restraint off slouching almost guarantees sliding off.

wheelymate, we are thinking the same thing, ours are 2, but I def dont want to buy yet another chair! (sorry axptguy!) so, me thinks, get one of those booster chairs - you know a little plastic booster that goes on a normal chair? They are cheap as chips really - and pop it on our normal dining chairs... B2B have them I think. This sort of thing:

We bought ours in the US. I asked at Bumps to Babes but they don't stock them. If If you can't get one from HK, I would source it from the US or UK. I'm sure some online store will ship it. Check Amazon. They have plenty of third party vendors.

And yes, I would be willing to pay the extra shipping. The chair really is that good.

Here are Amazon and Froogle search for US online vendors of the chair. I would just go down the list and contact them to see if they ship to HK. At Amazon you might even get the answer automatically when you get to "shipping".

The Chicco Highchairs are quite good and my princess has been using them for a couple of years now, the tray can be taken away, armrest can be put up or down, height of seats can be adjust, check the following website, although its a website of UK morthercare, but I've seen them selling in HK mothercare too and the price is reasonable for a long lasting highchair

It's subjective of course but I don't like high chairs of the Chicco type shown in the above link. Hotels tend to have this kind of chair so we have some experience. It is hard (even impossible) for the kid to get in and out of the chair by herself even once she is coordinated enough to do so.

Also I find these plastic chairs clash horribly with the rest of the furniture, while a Stokke blends in nicely.
