Apartment in City or House in Compound

We just arrived in Beijing and in process of house hunting. We looked at several compounds but it seem so isolated from restaurants, shops and etc. We like a house but maybe an apartment in the city is better? How is life in a compound? Is it easy to make friends? Everything seem far off from these compounds. Any suggestion will help!
