Moving to Beijing Posted by Peach (1132 days ago) My husband has a job at the International School Beijing starting next month and I plan to follow early September with our 8 month old daughter. Does anyone know the school? I am also a teacher and would like some part time work - is it easy to find work once there? We will be living in Capital Paradise so if anyone knows that compound and could give me any insight that would be great. I guess there are mother and baby groups in the area? I've never not worked before and am a bit nervous how to meet people outside of work contacts. We're used to big city life, coming from Cairo where we've been for the last three years but its a big culture change for us and I'm concerned about what to bring / what is available there for kids clothes-wise and the like. Beijing is quite modern compared to other parts of China. The only thing you might miss is Cap N' Crunch but maybe Jenny lou's has that too. Make sure if your kid is using baby formula or something like that that you buy at a place that sells mostly western stuff as there was a big scare with knock-off(counterfeit) baby products last year that made many infants sick and caused some deaths. My son is 5 years and we have been in BJ now for 1 1/2 years and we find it great. I work full time and feel lucky to be able to have a Ayi who looks after him so well when I am not there. ISB is a great school with an excellent reputation. I think a lot of the schools hire on local contracts and look for fill in teachers when one is absent. In the villa area there is a playgroup called the MOPS, for the contact details call the American Chamber of Cemmerce. It is a great starting point to meet fellow mums. Also there is the INN - International Newcomers Network. Monthly meetings are run at the Capital Mansions Athletic Club on the last Monday of every month. It is a great place to get started and pick up a Beijing guidebook, map and taxi book! I volenteer for INN.
