We are moving to Beijing from Shanghai soon. We like the Citysuper surpermarket in Shanghai, is there any similar type of high quality surpermarket in Beijing? thanks

Pacific is very expensive but has most western stuff you could want. Good for cheese. It's by Sanlitun bar street area, not hard to find.

Pacific Century Place/Dept store- Tai Ping Yang in Chinese on Gongti.. all cab drivers know it.
Carrefour have good quality meat, there are many branches throughout the city

You may also want to try Jenny Lou's. They have a lot of branches in the Chaoyang area. There is one near the West Gate of Chaoyang Park.
Does anyone know where to find tender lamb and beef? Every where we go, no matter what kind of cut we buy, the meat seems incredibly tough. The cuts at Carrefour seem a bit stringy and the meat at Jenny Lou's doesn't always look fresh. Does anyone know where to find Charlotte's Butchery? When we checked near the West Gate of Chaoyang Park all we found was Jenny Lou's. Has Charlotte's gone out of business?

For a good meat selection I would like to recommend Beijing Friendship Supermarket. It's located in 7 Sanlitun Lu.

Most places do good wines even Jenny Lous and at a reasonable price. The is a wine shop at Pinnacle Plaza out at Shunyi which I have heard isnt bad.

When I was at Carrefour on a Friday afternoon (about 3:30pm) it was extremely busy. Is it always like that or it is because people are shopping for Chinese New Year stuff? Do the staff always yell "Ten Yuan...come and buy, come and buy" (in Chinese).

Avoid the weekends at Carrefour. If you plan to go to one of the larger supermarkets I would stock up on non-perishables as soon as possible. It may already be too late with the holiday so soon. You can always pick up meat, fruit and vegetables at a smaller store like Jenny's or Schindler's.

Anyone found any pecans? I miss baking pecan pies and the only pecans I've found are in the Jenny Lou's knock off just south of Jenny lou's in Sanlitur, but they're candied and spiced! yeach!
