Hey im a 20year old student currently residing in beijing. Ive been thinking of purchasing a motorbike but have no clue on the laws and how or where to get a licence. Could somebody please clue me in?

This whole sublect can be a bit of a mystery....I have tried to find out the same a while ago. Originally I wanted to get one of those Chang Jiang bikes w/ sidecar and the numerous people who flog them can 'sort' your licence out too. You pay around RMB4k and you get the licence (Hebei - yellow plates). I never got to the bottom of whether you had to sit a test or whatever.....the answer was avoided(???) I have some friends around Beijing who have scooters - the Vespa type repro jobs....1 mate bought his, just gets on it and rides it....no helmet, no licence or anything and no-one bats any eyelid. I'm toying with the idea of getting 2 wheels again (rather than 3) and I too am still trying to find out the full story. The big problem is if you end up in a smash and hurt yourself or someone else....who pays for getting sued or the hospital bills. Presumably to go legit you need licence and insurance to cover yourself but some folk don't seem to bother. I'm going to carry on 'finding' out about this and will post back if I find anything of interest...please do the same mico5bei. Thanks
