Beijing Schooling
Posted by suec (1341 days ago)
Hi Does anyone have any children at the Yew Chung International School in Beijing. I have 2 boys 11 and 14 and would like to keep them in the UK system but dont know much about this school.
Find what you are after in our Beijing A-Z Directory

My son has joined this school for over a year. He's now in Year 10. He's also 14. So far the school has been more than satisfactory to us in terms of both curriculum which follows UK system and environment. Most of the teachers are also from UK or Australia. My son has a lot of good friends here. He told me that when he first got there, he had the warmest welcome he ever had from any school!!!
The other benefit from the school is their strong Chinese program. My son studies Mandarin for an hour everyday. Right now he can read, write and speak Mandarin quite well which I think will be a good asset for him in the future.
If you have any other inquiry and would like to contact the school directly, please write to Imelda at imeldal@ycef.com. She's an Australian lady taking care of the admission.
Hope my answer help and welcome to Beijing.

Many thanks for that. Hope you dont mind me picking your brains but are there many children in Year 10 and do they do a lot of sport at school. From the schools small prospectus they sent us it seems a very small school.

Actually it's not that small. They also coorganise a few sport events. My son plays a lot of sports. Last term he was in the school Basketball team, practicing three times a week. Also he plays/learns tennis every Friday at Western Academy of Beijing. On top of this, he's learning Fencing every Sunday. What I mean to say is that he can do sports at school as well as do it somewhere else because it's not that hard to find here. He just came back from Shanghai on a basketball tournament two weeks ago. It was the end of basketball season so this term he continues with football which he also did last year. Yew Chung might be small in size but they're smart enough to use the facility nearby. They use the park next door, for example, for runnning, etc., and Chaoyang Park for football practice. They also provide transportation for all the sport practice so you don't have to worry about it.
And there are two classes of year 10 this year. I think one class has about 15 to 20 students.

Thanks for quick reply - last questions (promise) Did you ever look at the International School of Beijing Shuny. I know my boys would have to study the International Baccalauret but it does seems to be a really well orgainised school and seems quite big. I just thought the ycef school might be a bit small. I was also worried about the academic side. many thanks

Before we decided to go with Yew Chung, we went to see all the international school here including the one you mention. My problem about the school in question, apart from the fact that it is an American school, is that it is far too big for my likking. Also we saw a few example of bad behaviours/manners while on tour. It might be partly because there are too many children to discipline or because there is no school uniform for students to feel like a student. Anyway in the end we let our son choose for himself (under our subtle guidance, of course) and he chose Yew Chung. Being in a small school of 150 students to a big school of over a thousand students, he then decided that 400 students is the right number for him. And he has been so happy ever since.
Personally I don't like big school because I think the teachers are too busy and there are too many types of students and it is more likely to have drugs problems. My son also enjoys teacher's attention so a medium-sized school suits him well. Another reason, though not critical, why we chose Yew Chung also because it is not far from our place.
I think in the end, it depends on your individual reasons and your children's opinions or needs.
Happy searching and hope you find a dood place to live and a good school for your children.
By the way, when are you moving to Beijing?

We are looking to relocate to Beijing in July so the boys can start the new term in August. You obviously feel the same about schools as I do. Our only problem with ycef was the lack of information and the prospectus they sent us. All the children seemed so young in it. Also we tried to get Imelda to give us a list of subjects taught but to no avail. We used to live in Malaysia and there the school was for 10 children, although my oldest was only 4 it was the best school he has ever been to. I do like the boys to wear uniform too.
As far as thinking where to live that is the next headache. We dont make life easy as we are also bringing our cat.

I, too am looking at Beijing schools for my two children, aged 7 and 9. I'm really keen on the Western Academy of Beijing. Anyone any experience of it?

Just looked at the ycef website and it has completely changed. It gives so much more information and answers many of our questions. Shows you should keep looking.

Sue, if you need any further information about the school or moving to Beijing, please email me at thaicybercat@hotmail.com I think we have something in common (I have cats too) and it might be useful to share the experience.

Hi Cybercat
We are starting to get ready for the move to Beijing so the questions might start coming thick and fast. I have sent you some emails but seem to be having trouble with my hotmail account, can you let me know you are getting them. Many thanks Sue
