Buying rugs in Beijing/buying quality sofa's
Posted by skitrees (1391 days ago)
I need to buy some rugs for my house and need some help-
1. How do you determine what is good quality?
2. Where can I buy them from?
I also need to buy some sofas-have been to many shops but haven't found top quality. I want hardwood frames. Any suggestions???

Most rugs are one-way, that is you can only use one side as the other side is the base. Well this is the mark of a production rug which is usually cheap to make. Alot of hand-made and quality rugs are very soft (not the stiff type) and can use both sides as they are woven by hand on old looms.
Not a professional explaination but I think you get my understanding. Check out around the Landmark Towers for some rugs.

For furniture, you can check out Orient Home, there are two locations I can think of one is right off the south-east fourth ring road (on the right if you are heading south) The other is on Chao Yang Lu (keep heading east all the way past the sixth ring road.) Sorry, about the inaccurate addresses, I know how to drive to the two locations, but not the addresses) I'll try and look them up for you, but you can see their ads in most periodicals.
Orient Home is sort of like a Home Depot/IKEA with the addition of independent furniture shops on the top floor (about two dozen at each location) The ones off the 4th ring road are better. The prices are also way lower.
You can get functional rugs in the do-it yourself section.
As for high-quality rugs, I am at a loss. There are the imported rug shops that will charge you a hand and a leg - but not recommended if you have young kids.
I think you can find some shops in Silk Alley with a good mix. But I suspect you will need to know what you are doing.
