Dogs in Beijing

I am bringing a small terrier to Beijing in January. Does anyone know if there are any "dog parks" in the area where he can socialize with other dogs?

Yes, there are plenty of parks around where you can socialise with other dogs. China is quite dog friendly but it really depends where you live. If you live in the suburbs then it becomes alot more difficult than in the city (I suspect).

Actually, there are a greater variety of dogs outside of the fourth ring road (ie - the suburbs) given the rules against having larger dogs within the fourth ring road.

There is also an animal park - essentially a dog park called "guo du" - where you can meet dog owners from throughout the city. The park is great, you can let your dog go around unleashed (everyone else does it) They have a picnic area and a dog market - multiple vendors - selling pets and pet supplies. On any given weekend you will find a minimum of 200 dogs there.

Also check out www.chinapet.com if you read chinese, for the latest information on exhibitions and dog shows, vet/shop recommendations, and breeders/breed clubs etc.

I've got a french bull dog and an alsatian myself. Make sure you get your pet registered properly. Please make sure he has his shots. While dog ownership is increasing in popularity and despite the "strict" rules, many dog owners don't bother and rabies is endemic.

Also, get yourself a reputable moving agency that will help you with the paperwork involved in bringing the dog into the country. There is a mandatory one month quarantine, which a reputable company may help you to negotiate to be served at home.
