We are Americans currently living in Malaysia and may be relocating to Beijing. How large is the expat community in Bejing? Are there very many Americans? American food?

Don't worry. All is OK in Beijing.

Plenty of your kind here. Of the 230k I think there is about 30-40k Americans so it's one of the largest propotions here. The largest groups are Koreans and Japanese.

According to the statistics from the authority, there are almost 230,000 permanent expatriate residents living in Beijing. Americans, of course, make one of the major parts of it. There are number of high-end residential expat communities scattered in Chaoyang District and intensively in Shunyi City (near airport) such as Beijing Rivera, River Garden, Capital Paradise , Dynasty and so on. Among them the Beijing Rivera and River Garden are the two prestigious American communities. We would be pleased to take you to these places for inspection if you prefer living in American compound.

Most expatriate communities has small grocery stores/mini markets serve imported food as well as America food; For the famous ones, you can try Jenny Lou’s(little chain of grocery shops offers a great assortment of western food, such as Italian pasta, cereals, canned food, cheese, fresh vegetables and fruit, imported wines as well as liquor), April Gourmet(provide high-end imported foods and fabulous different sorts of cheeses) , Carrefour, etc.
