Student X Visa advice

I am currently a student in Wangjing due to finish my studies in three weeks. Once my studies have finished I wish to find employment in Beijing. However, someone told me that to change my X visa to a working visa I need to leave the mainland for a few days. If I find an employer who is willing to change my visa do I still need to leave the country or are there ways around this?

I am afraid you have to.
If your position is below Vice GM, you have to leave China mainland.

But through an agent, you may not do so.
